“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe.”

–Hebrews 12:28

Annotation: Believers are reminded of the unshakable nature of God's kingdom, which leads to thankfulness and reverent worship.

Note: Gratitude flows from understanding our secure and eternal position in Christ.

Here’s a breakdown of what this verse means:

1. "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken"

The "kingdom" here refers to the eternal, unshakable kingdom of God, which is contrasted with the temporary, earthly things that can be shaken or destroyed. In the previous verses, the author of Hebrews contrasts the old covenant (represented by Mount Sinai, which was unstable and could be shaken) with the new covenant in Christ, which is stable, secure, and eternal. Believers are part of this unshakable kingdom—God's reign in the new heaven and new earth, which will never be destroyed or overturned.

2. "Let us be thankful"

The proper response to receiving such a secure, eternal kingdom is gratitude. Believers should thank God for His grace in allowing them to be part of His unshakable kingdom, a kingdom that offers ultimate security and stability in a world that is constantly changing and unstable.

3. "And so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe"

Because God is the giver of this unshakable kingdom, the appropriate response is worship. The phrase "worship God acceptably" refers to worship that is in line with God's will, done in a way that honors Him. This worship should be characterized by two attitudes:

  • Reverence: A deep respect and awe for God, recognizing His holiness, power, and greatness.

  • Awe: A sense of wonder and amazement at God's majesty and the privilege of being in relationship with Him.

Together, these words suggest that our worship should not be casual or indifferent, but filled with respect and a recognition of God's supreme authority.

Overall Meaning:

This verse is a call to live in light of the security and greatness of God's kingdom. Believers are reminded that they are receiving a kingdom that is eternal and unshakable—something far greater than anything earthly. As a result, they should respond with gratitude and worship that is fitting for such a great God. The proper worship is marked by reverence (a deep respect) and awe (a sense of wonder and amazement) toward God, acknowledging His greatness and the privilege of being part of His eternal kingdom.

In essence, Hebrews 12:28 encourages Christians to reflect on the incredible nature of God's kingdom and respond by offering worship that is sincere, respectful, and filled with awe.
