“When one of them saw he was healed, he came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.”

–Luke 17:15-16

Annotation: A healed Samaritan leper returns to Jesus to express deep gratitude, demonstrating the importance of returning thanks to God.

Note: Gratitude is not only a feeling but also an action, seen in the leper’s response to Jesus.

1. "I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart"

  • "Give thanks": David expresses his intention to offer gratitude and praise to God.

  • "With all my heart": This emphasizes sincerity and totality in David's gratitude. He is not giving thanks out of obligation or routine, but from the depths of his being. It signifies wholehearted devotion and genuine praise.

  • "Lord": This refers to Yahweh, the covenant name of God, acknowledging His relationship with His people and His authority as the sovereign God.

David is committing to praise God with full sincerity and from the core of his being, not just outwardly or superficially.

2. "I will tell of all your wonderful deeds"

  • "I will tell": David is expressing his intention to proclaim or testify. His gratitude isn't silent or internal but is meant to be shared with others.

  • "All your wonderful deeds": This refers to the mighty acts of God, His works in history, particularly His acts of deliverance, provision, and faithfulness to His people. The term "wonderful" conveys the idea of awe-inspiring, miraculous deeds that reflect God's power, goodness, and faithfulness.

David isn't just thanking God for what He has done; he is also committed to telling others about God's greatness. This could include sharing about God's past deliverances, the way He has acted in history, and His personal involvement in David's life.

Overall Meaning:

This verse is an expression of wholehearted praise and testimony. David is committing to thank God with every part of himself, and not only that, but he also feels compelled to proclaim God's greatness to others. His thanks are not just private feelings but a public declaration of the wonderful deeds God has done.

  • Heartfelt thanksgiving: David’s gratitude isn’t just a formal ritual; it’s an emotional, personal, and genuine response to God’s goodness.

  • Public testimony: David desires to share the story of God’s great works with others, to encourage others to recognize and praise God too.

This verse highlights the connection between personal worship (thanksgiving with the heart) and public witness (testifying about God's deeds). It's a reminder that true gratitude for God’s actions leads naturally to sharing His goodness with others. It’s an encouragement for believers to not only thank God privately but also to proclaim His greatness to the world.

Annotation:

David's expression of wholehearted gratitude is not just about feeling thankful in his heart; it's about actively sharing and proclaiming the wonderful deeds of God. This is a model for believers—true worship involves both internal gratitude and external proclamation, where the acknowledgment of God’s greatness moves us to testify about Him and His works to others.
